outhampton is a city right in the middle of the South Coast of England, and is one of the main port cities in the UK, and it's the UK equivalent of Fort Lauderdale being the main base for cruise ships. Being on the South Coast and surrounded by some wonderful English Countryside, Southampton has some great places to visit for a day out.
Starting at the Bargate in the centre of the old part of Southampton, visitors can take a self guided tour around the city walls, and learn about the history of the city that dates from Roman times. Don't miss the memorial to the Titanic, which sailed from here, or the Mayflower memorial - the Pilgrim Fathers also left from Southampton. Enjoy the old Gaol House, and the Maritime Museum.
Manor Farm Country Park in Botley is a working farm that is set on the Hamble River. The farm has exhibits that show how farming used to be done years ago, but also has extensive walks along the Hamble River, through the woods and fields.
Netley Abbey is on the banks of the Itchen River in the village of Netley. The abbey was used as a country house until the beginning of the eighteenth century, after which it was abandoned and partially demolished for building materials. The abbey has extensive ruins, and is great for children to explore, and also for taking photographs.
Royal Victoria Country Park in Netley is built on the site of Netley Hospital which was built after the Crimean War, all that remains being the chapel in the center of the park. The hospital is where thousands of casualties were taken to be treated after being injured in wars until WW11. The park has great views along Southampton Water, where visitors can see large Cruise Ships entering and leaving the port of Southampton. There are trails through the woodland, which includes a WWI cemetery where many wounded troups who did not survive were buried.
Further along the river from Manor Farm is a walking and cycle trail that leads across the marches from the villages of Swanwick to Warsash. This is a very scenic walk, where you are likely to see a number of wild birds, deer and also donkeys. In Warsash at the Rising Sun pub is a commemorative plaque to honour the British Commandos who left here for Normandy and the D-Day invasion.
