Building a Classroom Frog Pond

That experience creates eager learners who strive to read and write better so that they can tell others of their experiences. Contemplating the numbers of insects needed to feed the frogs, the area of the pond and how much water it contains as well as calculating the number of frogs that will develop from the quantity of eggs laid in the pond offers incentive to learn mathematical concepts.

Frog Patterns for a Frog Unit Study

Mathematics is based on patterns. Mathematicians use numbers and symbols to describe the patterns they find all around them. In this lens we will work with the frog theme to create and describe mathematical patterns as they relate to the Frog Unit Study.

Frog Themed Literacy Bags
Starting about the second week of Kindergarten my daughter was given the opportunity to take home what her teacher called Story Bags or Take Home Literacy Bags. She loved them so much that I started making Literacy Bags for my classroom. They are theme-related bags with books, activities, and journals to take home and share with family members. I soon realized how much better these literacy bags were compared to traditional homework.
In this lens I will describe one of the first literacy bags that I created when doing a Frog Unit Study with my Kindergarten and First Grade Class. We began our unit study by brainstorming everything we knew about frogs. We then read a couple of books about frogs before going out to the Frog Pond to check the accuracy of our sources. When it was time to choose a literacy bag to take home for the week, the children could hardly wait to choose their homework.
Literacy Bags make homework so much fun that your children will be begging to take their homework home.

Frog Eggs
Each year we eagerly await the arrival of spring to listen to the Spring Peeper and anticipate the discovery of frog eggs in the vernal pools. Frogs lay their eggs in pools, ponds, and puddles. As snow melts, low lying areas fill with water and frogs start looking for a place to lay their eggs.
On our farm in Royalton we find frog eggs in the vernal pools of the woods, in pools near the water fall, and in setbacks along the banks of the river.
Come search with us for frog eggs...

Geometry of Frogs
As teachers and homeschoolers we often think of math a subject totally unrelated to the theme we are studying. In this lens I hope to dispel l this myth. Using the frog theme we will explore geometric shapes. From the circular bubbles rising up from the frog pond to making origami frogs, this lens is all about the geometry of frogs.
Create a Frog Pond Bulletin Board using geometric shapes. Put together a triangular frog puzzle. Use pattern blocks, geoboards and many other materials to make frogs, tadpoles and the ponds they live in and around.
Children need plenty of creative hands-on learning to develop the concrete knowledge of concepts that lead to higher level mathematics. These learning center activities extend the Frog Unit Study with frog themed geometric shaped activities.

Are You a Frog?
One day when we arrived at the frog pond the kids decided to try to become frogs. They were hopping and leaping from spot to spot yelling rib-bit, rib-bit, rib-bit at the tops of their lungs. Then they tried to see who could jump the farthest. It wasn't too long before they were all tired out and decided to take a break so I invited them to come over and sit on a lily pad (the blanket) to talk about the characteristics of frogs.
What are the characteristics of a frog? What makes a frog different from you and I? Do we have any similarities? What do we know about frogs?
We started to make a list and then turned it into a venn graph to compare frogs with humans.
This lens is the result of that day of investigation into the characteristics of frogs vs. humans.
